Interesting Facts About Tobey Maguire

When the comic book series Spider-Man began, it offered readers a new kind of superhero whose real identity was that of an earnest young man with everyday problems and the weight of the world on his shoulders. On film, actor Tobey Maguire seemed to bring that complex character to life. His performances in Spider-Man and its sequels were essential to the popular and critical success of the films.

Tobias Vincent Maguire was born on June 27, 1975, in Santa Monica, California. Early in his life, Maguire's parents split up, leaving him to travel back and fourth between them. His mother encouraged Tobey to act; he took lessons, tried out for parts, and left school by the ninth grade to pursue his calling full-time. As a teenager, he worked in commercials and appeared in bit parts on television.

Maguire finally hit his stride in the 1997 film The Ice Storm. The quiet drama focused on a 1970s American family. Maguire occupied the film's moral center as the sensitive and romantic son. Critics and audiences alike were taken with Maguire's softspoken delivery and wide-eyed expressiveness; he seemed to exude an intelligence beyond his years. It was a persona he would adopt in a string of successful films. Among them were Pleasantville (1998), The Cider House Rules (1999), and Wonder Boys (2000). In each case Maguire seemed right at home working with accomplished actors such as Michael Caine and Michael Douglas.

As he grew older, Maguire faced the challenge of maintaining his sympathetic-boy appeal while playing more-adult roles. He found the perfect stepping-stone in Spider-Man (2002), which featured Maguire as a thinking-man's action hero. He reprised the role in two sequels: Spider-Man 2 (2004) and Spider-Man 3 (2007). Maguire's performances helped to make the Spider-Man movies some of the most profitable films in history.

Maguire also earned positive reviews for his work in Seabiscuit (2003). Today, he remains a versatile and popular actor.
