Interesting Facts About Sarah Jessica Parker

Former child actor Sarah Jessica Parker has grown into one of America's most versatile, talented, and enduring entertainers. Equally at home in television, movies, and on the stage, she has been an audience favorite wherever she has performed.

Parker grew up in the farm country of south-central Ohio. Her parents divorced when she was only a year old. So she and her seven brothers and sisters were raised by their school-teacher mother and her second husband. Parker was a born entertainer; her singing and dancing quickly became a way to earn badly needed money for the family.

At age eight, Parker made her first appearance before a national audience in the television special The Little Match Girl. Three years later, in 1976, when she was 11, she landed a role in the Broadway production of The Innocents, directed by renowned playwright Harold Pinter. Her family moved to New Jersey to be closer to the New York City theaters. After The Innocents closed, Parker toured America with four of her brothers and sisters, performing in The Sound of Music. Parker's next big break came in 1979, when for two years she played the title role in the hit Broadway musical Annie.

Although working full-time, Parker did not neglect her schooling. She attended the New York Professional Children's School and the American Ballet Theatre. Between classes and evening productions of Annie, she auditioned for television and movies roles. In 1982, she won a role as a clumsy but endearing nerd in the television sitcom Square Pegs. Again the family moved; this time, they went to Hollywood.

By the middle 1980s, Parker was eager to find roles that could display her versatility. She appeared in the 1984 box-office hit Footloose. The following year, she shared billing with a young Helen Hunt in the movie Girls Just Want to Have Fun. In 1986, Parker appeared in her final teen role in the film The Flight of the Navigator.

By the 1990s, Parker was ready to move into more adult roles. This is a difficult transition for many actors, but Parker made it seem effortless. She turned in critically acclaimed performances in L.A. Story (1991); Honeymoon in Vegas (1992); Hocus Pocus (1993); and Ed Wood (1994).

In 1998, Parker took the lead role in the HBO series Sex and the City. The enormous success of the program elevated Parker to new heights of celebrity. She earned an Emmy Award in 2004 and Golden Globe Awards in 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2004. Her later films include The Family Stone (2005), Failure to Launch (2006), and Spinning into Butter (2007). A film version of Sex and the City, with Parker as star and coproducer, was released in 2008. Parker is married to actor Matthew Broderick. They have three children.
