Interesting Facts About Madonna

When Madonna's first recordings were released, some rock critics wrote that her voice was thin and colorless. And many people complained that her songs and videos were demeaning to women. But Madonna didn't let criticism stop her. She became one of pop music's biggest stars. And she has used her musical success to branch out into other fields. Over the course of her career, Madonna has spent time as an actress, a record and film producer, and an author of children's books.

Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone was born in Bay City, Michigan, in 1958. She began her career in 1978 as a dancer in New York City. She later appeared with various groups as a drummer and singer, and then formed her own band. Her first album, Madonna, was released in 1983, and the single "Borderline" was her first Top 10 hit. But it was her second album, Like a Virgin (1984), featuring "Material Girl," that made Madonna a superstar. Touring the country, she attracted huge audiences, including thousands of girls who copied her punkish style. Her next album, True Blue (1986), sold more than 5 million copies in the United States alone.

Seeking new challenges, Madonna turned to acting. She appeared on Broadway in 1988 in David Mamet's play, Speed the Plow. And she made several movies, including Desperately Seeking Susan (1985); Dick Tracy (1990); A League of Their Own (1992); and Evita (1996). But Madonna kept on recording music. Her later albums include Like a Prayer (1989); Bedtime Stories (1994); the Grammy-winning Ray of Light (1998); Music (2000); and American Life (2003).

In 2003, Madonna published her first children's book, The English Roses. It was followed by several others; they have been published in 100 countries around the world.

In 2005, Madonna released the album Confessions on a Dance Floor and the documentary "I'm Going to Tell You a Secret," based on her 2004 Reinvention Tour. She returned to the dance floor during a worldwide Confessions Tour in 2006. The album Confessions on a Dance Floor provided the basis for the tour. Madonna's 11th studio album, Hard Candy, was released in 2008. That same year, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Celebration, a new album of Madonna hits, was released in 2009.

Throughout her career, Madonna has attracted attention by frequently reinventing her performing style and her "look." By doing so, she has kept herself on the forefront of the changing world of popular music.

Madonna married filmmaker Guy Ritchie in 2000. She has four children, including a boy and a girl adopted from Malawi. I Am Because We Are, Madonna's documentary on poverty and disease affecting Malawi's children, was released in 2008. She also has established Raising Malawi, a charity that helps to feed, educate, and give medical care to Malawi's orphans. Madonna and Ritchie were divorced in 2009.
