Interesting Facts About Jessica Simpson

Jessica Simpson has grown as famous for her supposedly ditzy image as for her beauty and her singing voice. Yet appearances can be deceiving. The girl who once asked her husband if Chicken of the Sea was tuna or chicken is also an ambitious performer who has dedicated much of her life to becoming a star.

Jessica Ann Simpson was born in Dallas, Texas. She began singing at a young age; she first sang in the choir of the local Baptist church. At age 12, she tried out for The Mickey Mouse Club. This popular television show was a well-known training ground for future talent like Simpson's eventual rivals Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. But Simpson faced an early disappointment when she was turned down for the club. Instead, with the help of her manager-father Joe (a minister) and stylist-mother Tina, Simpson signed with a small Christian-music label. Meanwhile, she attended J.J. Pearce High School, from which she graduated in 1998.

Simpson finally got noticed by Columbia Records, and cut an album called Sweet Kisses (1999). She toured with popular boy bands and had a hit single in "I Wanna Love You Forever." Still, Simpson wasn't nearly as well-known as younger competitors Spears and Aguilera. Her follow-up album, Irresistible (2001), did only modest business. Simpson did stand out, however, for her outspoken position on abstinence before marriage. And she went against the conventional wisdom concerning a bubblegum star's image when she married singer Nick Lachey in 2002.

Simpson's marriage, as it turned out, was the best thing that ever happened to her career. The couple agreed to star in an MTV reality show titled Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica. It offered viewers front-row seats for the joys and tribulations of matrimony. Simpson and Lachey, for all their wealth and leisure, charmed viewers by also being down-to-Earth and charmingly in love. And Simpson maintained a sense of humor about the onscreen missteps that gave the show its buzz.

Newlyweds helped boost sales of Simpson's next album, In This Skin (2003). She capitalized on her chemistry with hubby Nick to make The Nick and Jessica Variety Hour for ABC and also gave her blessing to the budding music career of sister Ashlee. Simpson kicked off her own film career, as well, when she landed the role of Daisy in The Dukes of Hazzard (2005). But by the year's end, Simpson's marriage was in trouble. She and Lachey divorced in June 2006.

Despite this personal disappointment, Simpson moved forward with her career. She returned to the studio to record her fourth album, And the Band Played On (2006). She also had a starring role in the 2006 comedy Employee of the Month.
